They say that you can’t reinvent the wheel, but that isn’t always true. Modern car tires are some of the most advanced technology in your vehicle. Having the right tires for the season, as everyone in Calgary knows, can make a huge difference when it comes to you and your loved ones’ safety. But which tires are right for you, and when do you change them? Here are a few things you should know to make sure you have the right tires:

What Are Seasonal Tires? There are generally four kinds of tires you can buy today: all-season tires, all-weather tires, winter tires, and summer tires. Each one is different and used for different purposes. All-season tires sound like they can be used anytime and are typically what cars have when they come out of a showroom. In Calgary, however, they’re not really for every season. They’re more of an average tire that works well when road conditions and temperatures are not at extremes. In heavy snow or at really high heats, they don’t work as well as specialized tires. Summer tires are great for high temperatures and good road conditions. If the environment is right for summer tires, their shallow tread creates more contact between the rubber of the tire and the road, giving you more control and efficiency. Anything less than great conditions, however, can mean that the shallow tread becomes a liability. Winter tires are essential in Canada. Their deep treads and special designs help them cut through snow and ice, so you don’t skid. They’re also made out of a special rubber that stays pliant in very cold temperatures. For any Canadian, these are a must-have for safe winter driving. When Should I Get My Tires Changed? The answer to this question depends on how you use your vehicle and where you live. Unless you’re really concerned with car performance, most people switch between all-season and winter tires when they feel confident that the weather has definitely changed if you live in an area that doesn’t get its streets cleared of snow that often, however, you may want to switch to summer tires a little later to be on the safe side.
