Your engine oil is one of the most important fluids in your car. Maintaining your oil is one of the single best things you can do to ensure your engine’s consistent performance. In particular, these temperatures can affect engine oil. Knowing exactly when you need to get your oil changed can be confusing, so here are five signs you might need an oil change:
1. The engine light is on It might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people simply ignore their warning lights. If one of your warning lights is on, something is wrong, and you should consult an expert as soon as possible. 2. Change in oil colour Unless you have special additives or you’re using a unique brand, clean engine oil is typically an amber colour. Everyday use, heat, and some contaminants can change the colour of the oil, indicating that it needs to be changed. 3. Exhaust smoke All engines give off some kind of smoke. These days, however, that smoke is mostly invisible. Even a little white vapour when you first start your car in the morning is probably just condensation. If you see a lot of smoke, however, it’s a sign that there’s a problem. Your engine may be burning oil rather than gasoline, and you should get it checked out immediately. 4. Decrease in engine performance If you haven’t had an oil change in a while, the old oil can solidify, creating what is known as “engine sludge.” This sludge can occur for several reasons and, if left unchecked, it can interfere with how your engine operates. If there has been no accident or other change, but the performance of your car (gas mileage, acceleration, etc.) is declining, you need to consult an expert.
